Foreign Policy Challenges for the New Administration: Iran and the Middle East
March 5-6, 2009
Cabot Intercultural Center, Tufts University, Medford Campus
The newly elected Obama administration that took
office in January 2009 will have to deal with a number of
ongoing, difficult problems in the Middle East. Many of
these will be of considerable concern to Americans in the
near future. Participants in the conference will be asked to
expound on and analyze these concerns, one of which is the
continuing confrontation between the United States and Iran.
The U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and subsequent
developments in that country have had a significant impact
on Iran’s position and policy there, but American and
Iranian interests and policies have collided in the Gulf
also, as well as in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Nuclear issues in particular have brought the United States
and Iran into renewed confrontation. Are there opportunities
for the new administration to take steps to change the
dynamic in a helpful way? Conference Schedule:
