Foreign Policy Challenges for the New Administration: Iran and the Middle East
March 5-6, 2009
Cabot Intercultural Center, Tufts University, Medford Campus

The purpose of this conference is to identify issues that, in light of a new American administration, will be of concern to Americans in 2009, specifically the continuing confrontation between the United States and Iran. The U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and subsequent developments in that country have had a significant impact on Iran’s position and policy there. Yet, American and Iranian interests and policies have collided in the Gulf and in the Eastern Mediterranean region, as well. Nuclear issues in particular have brought the United States and Iran into renewed confrontation. The conference will address these concerns and how the new administration can take steps to change the dynamic in a helpful way.

Questions and discussions will center on how other Middle Eastern states have been affected by the war in Iraq and by regional challenges; how the new leadership in Washington should understand and deal with political and military developments that are unfolding in the Middle East; and how the United States should best serve its own interests while helping parties in the Middle East manage ongoing conflicts.

Engaging in Dialogue on U.S. Foreign Policy
November 8-9, 2004
Cabot Intercultural Center, Tufts University, Medford Campus

This conference was planned to take place just after the U.S. presidential elections, in the hope that the discussions of our expert participants on how best to move forward in the Middle East will provide valuable insights and suggestions to a new or returning U.S. administration. The centrality of American leadership in the world and the inevitability of its involvement with the Middle East for years to come make it imperative to reflect on what we can learn from recent foreign policy and world events, and what we can recommend to those who are in a position to shape the future of our world.
