Speaker Biography

François Burgat, a political scientist and Arabist, is Senior Research Fellow (Directeur de recherches) at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Aix-en-Provence. He has lectured at a wide range of institutions throughout the world, including the World Economic Forum, NATO, and major private and public think tanks. He was a permanent resident in the Middle East for over 18 years, and has held positions at the University of Constantine, Algeria (1973-1980), in Cairo at the CEDEJ (1989-1993), and as the director of the French Center for Archaeology and Social Sciences in Sanaa (1997-2003). His expertise is on economic matters and questions of political risk. His main publications include The Islamic Movement in North Africa (1997), Face to Face with Political Islam (2002), Islamism in the Shadow of al-Qaeda (2008, originally published in French 2005).
